A Vegan Experience of Surgery & Recovery: I had chest reconstruction surgery on August 22nd 2017. For Vegan Mofo 2017, I will be writing about my experience preparing for surgery and my ongoing recovery.
I love care packages. Nothing feels better when you’re tired, sore, lonely, sad etc than getting a bunch of wonderful surprise goodies delivered to you.
I had a few care packages during my recovery, but there’s one in particular I want to write about because it came from fellow blogger and Vegan Mofoer Susan over at Kittens Gone Lentil which means it also came all the way from AUSTRALIA! Yes, that’s right. International care package!
I was so bloody excited when Susan got in touch to say she wanted to send me a little something. I gave my boyfriends address as that’s where I’d be spending most of recovery but it was agonising waiting to get back to Edinburgh to open it. I was so desperate to see what was inside.
Well. Take a look at that haul! This brought me so much joy! All new products that I’ve never tried before. I didn’t know where to begin, but decided on chocolate biscuits because, chocolate.
The Tim Tam biscuits were AMAZING! I loved these so much. I’m told they’re a big thing in Australia, they reminded me of the Penguin bars we have here over in the UK. Sadly there are no vegan versions of these here, so I was thrilled to have these to munch on. I managed to make these last a few weeks by eating one every now and then, it was very hard but these were my absolute favourite and I wanted to make them last.
I didn’t manage to do that with the Chicken Style chips. These were gone within 10 minutes, I scoffed the whole lot. My god they were good. I loved the texture of them and the flavouring was soo chickeny. I miss these kinds of crisps!
The Fava Beans were next to go down. I love Fava Beans, especially roasted and flavoured. I often get bags of the Salted Fava Beans from Hodmedod’s to snack on but pizza and Salt & Balsamic were new to me. OH MY GOODNESS. All snacks should be pizza flavoured! Seriously, these were SO GOOD.
I found the French Fries crisps really interesting as we have our own French Fries here in the UK, these are totally different and incredibly tasty. They were the perfect salty snack
The Nutty Chew and the Chick-O-Stick were the last to be devoured. In fact I only finished the last Chick-O-Stick this afternoon. These are so good, chewy AND crunchy peanut snacks? Yes please! I love the salty sweet combo and particularly loved the crunch of the Chick-O-Stick.
And finally, I had a lovely note and also a list of Buffy podcast recommendations <3. Susan, you rock! And know me so well!
This was just the most touching, wonderful, lovely surprise ever and I am so grateful to know such caring people. I’ve also spent the last few months thinking of some special treats here in the UK that I can send over as a thank you. I love package exchanges!
I also want to give a shout out to Vegan Bear who also loaded me up with all kinds of lovely treats when we met up after surgery. I didn’t take many photos because I was too quick to hoover loads of it up but he sent me away with:
- Follow Your Heart Mayo, Caesar Dressing, Blue Cheese Dressing
- Numerous chocolate bars, nak’d bars and the like
- Super tasty Peanut Puffs that I LOVE
- Little Doone Balsamic Dressings that are so sweet and amazing and can just be eaten with crusty bread for hours, seriously so good
- Brown Rice Mochi
- And a selection of Upton’s pulled Jackfruit to try
Seriously, I was spoilt rotten by my friends. I still have lots of these things to get through and can’t wait to try it all.
